Halloween is a holiday that is celebrated annually on October 31. It has its origins in old European traditions. In ancient times, Celtic festival of Samhain was celebrated in which bonfires were lighted and costumes were worn to drive off ghosts. It was during 8th century that Pope Gregory III declared November 1 as the time for honouring saints. Then, All Saints Day included some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before that was known as All Hallows Eve and later as Halloween. As time passed, Halloween started to develop into a day of activities like carving jack-o-lanterns and trick-or-treating.
