Tea: A Refreshing and Healthy Beverage

Every morning becomes refreshed when you wake up because of your favourite beverage i.e., TEA. Tea gives a fresh start to any ordinary day. It recharges you. In fact, you will find that it has become the most important part of your daily routine.

Tea is one of the most ancient beverages on the planet and it’s made by soaking dried leaves in water. Many people prefer to drink tea instead of coffee because certain blends are refreshing without the same level of caffeine. Tea is not only good in taste but it is healthy to drink. Tea drinkers have a significantly lower risk of stroke and heart disease and tea is known to boost brain health. The caffeine in tea may also be a con, although the levels are lower than coffee.

There are many distinct tea producing regions of North-East and South India. Some of them are Darjeeling, Assam, Dooars & Terai, Kangra, Nilgiri, Anamalais, Wayanad, Karnataka, Munnar and Travancore.

Tea is mainly classified into five different types. These are Black Tea, Green Tea, Herbal Tea, Oolong Tea and Pu-Erh Tea.  All these different kind of tea are made from same plant species which is known as Camellia Sinensis. The distinguishing factor that determines whether a tea plant will become green, oolong, or black tea is oxidation.

Black Tea also known as red tea in China, is one of the most common tea types and is fully oxidised.It has bold, strong, full-bodied flavor that can be bitter or sweet,  vegetal, fruity or spicy depending on the variety.

Green tea is the most popular unoxidized tea and has less caffeine than black tea. Camellia sinensis leaves are picked, dried, and heat-treated to prevent oxidation. It has milder flavor than black tea. It can have a citrus-like, vegetal, sweet, or smoky flavor depending on variety.

Herbal Tea is made from dried herbs, fruits, and flowers, which can create a wide range of delicate flavors. These tea types are caffeine free which make it ideal for health conscious people. It has a delicate flavor that can be vegetal, naturally sweet, citrus-like, floral, minty, or spicy depending on the variety and blend of ingredients.

Oolong or wulong  tea is semi-oxidized and picked later in the season than green tea. The leaves come from the Camellia sinensis plant but are bruised by being tossed or shaken in baskets  which change the oxidation process. They are heat-treated to stop the oxidation, which can vary based on region and create different flavors. It can taste flowery, naturally sweet, fruity, or smoky.

Pu-erh Tea is made from fermented and aged leaves. If it’s stored properly, the older the tea, the better the flavor. It is very smooth in taste, and can be even darker than black tea.
