Every February 14, we celebrate Valentine’s day throughout the world. The loved ones exchange flowers, gifts and candy in the name of St. Valentine. Valentine’s Day and its saints have mysterious history. February month is also known as the month of romance. St. Valentine’s Day has traces of traditions of both ancient Romans and Christians. Who was Saint Valentine, and why he is associated with this rite?

There are three different saints in the Catholic church including Valentine/Valentinus. According to a legend, St. Valentine served during third century. During that time, Emperor Claudius II said that single men were better soldiers as compared to those with wives and therefore he decided that marriage should be banned. St Valentine realised that this was wrong, so he performed marriages secretly. But soon Claudius found out about the actions of Claudius gave a death sentence to him.

According to another legend, St. Valentine may have been killed for trying to help Christians escape Roman prisons.
