Valentine’s Day, also known as St. Valentine’s Day is celebrated on February 14th of every year. On this day lovers exchange greetings and gifts with each other to show affection. The origins of the festival are attributed to a Roman festival called Lupercalia which was celebrated in the middle of February. The festival celebrated the spring festival and fertility rites. Men and women were paired together by a lottery system. It was at the end of 5th century that Pope Gelasius I decided to convert Lupercalia to St. Valentine’s Day. It was not until 14th century that the day came to be celebrated as the day of romance.
It is also believed that the St. Valentine’s day that is celebrated on 14th Feb has traces of Christian and ancient Roman traditions. Who was St. Valentine? How was he associated with this ancient ritual?
According to Catholic Church, there are at least three different saints named as Valentine or Valentinus. According to legend, Valentine served in Rome as a priest during the third century. The emperor Claudius II decided that single men were better soldiers as compared to those with families and wives. So, he banned the marriage of young men. Valentine knew that this was wrong and decided to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Claudius found out about Valentine’s actions, it was ordered that he should be put to death. Besides this story, there are other legends of different priests named Valentine, all of whom were martyred.
